Bachelor of Science in Commerce

The Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) consists of coursework in Commerce as well as coursework to satisfy the Liberal Studies Program requirements.  In addition, Commerce students take one course in Communication, one course in Professional Writing, and Open Elective coursework to meet the 192.0 quarter hour minimum required for graduation.

Commerce Coursework

All students in the College must complete coursework in the areas of accountancy, mathematics, economics, business law, finance, management, management information systems and marketing.

Commerce courses are distributed across the following areas:

  • Introductory Commerce Coursework (should be completed during the first two years of study)
  • Advanced Commerce Coursework
  • Senior Level Business Coursework
  • Major Area Coursework

Introductory Business Coursework (IBC):

During the first two years of study, all students must take the following courses and earn C- grade minimums, as well as they must earn a cumulative IBC G.P.A. of  2.0 minimum:

  • Business Mathematics and Statistics (BMS): 125 Business Calculus I; 126 Business Calculus II; 142 Business Statistics
  • Economics (ECO): 105 Principles of Microeconomics; 106 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • Accountancy (ACC): 101 Principles of Accounting 1 with a LAB ; 102 Principles of Accounting II
  • Business Law (BLW): 201 Legal Environment of Business

Students should complete the business mathematics and statistics sequence in the freshman year. 

Advanced Business Coursework (ABC):

  • Marketing (MKT): 301 Principles of Marketing; 310 Consumer Behavior
  • Management (MGT): 300 Managerial Concepts and Practices I; 301 Managerial Concepts and Practices II
  • Management Information Systems (MIS): 340 Management Information Systems
  • Finance (FIN): 310 Financial Management I
  • Economics (ECO): 315 Money and Banking;  OR  Finance (FIN): 320 Money and Banking (Finance and Real Estate Majors must take the FIN 320 course)

Senior Level Business Coursework:

  • Interdisciplinary Senior Studies (ICS): 392 Senior Seminar (with a grade of C- or better); 394 Entrepreneurship Strategy or 395 Management Strategy

Major Area Coursework:

Students must select a major in one of the Commerce disciplines and complete coursework for that major as defined by the respective academic department.  In some instances students must also select a concentration within the major.  Majors currently offered at the Undergraduate Level include:
  • Accountancy (Standard and Strobel Honors)
  • Business Administration
  • E-Business
  • Economics
  • Finance (Standard and Honors)
  • Management (6 Concentrations to choose from)
  • Management Information Systems
  • Marketing (3 Concentrations to choose from and Honors)
  • Real Estate
Note:  Any coursework taken in the student's major area must be completed with C- grade minimums.  Grades below C- do not count toward major graduation requirements.  In addition, there are G.P.A. minimums required in each major for Major Declaration and graduation purposes.

Additional Requirements:

  • One course in Communication (CMNS): 220 Public Speaking or 212 Small Group Communication; OR MKT 376 Effective Business Communication.
  • One course in Professional Writing chosen from Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse (WRD) 202, 204, 206, or 301.
  • Open Electives to meet the 192.0 quarter hour minimum required for graduation (averages between 14.0 - 24.0 quarter hours).
  • Global Perspective (GP) Requirement:  Students must complete at least three courses with a global focus.  This requirement is typically met through the completion of courses taken to satisfy the Liberal Studies Program requirements.  A list of courses that satisfy the GP requirement can be found online under "Student Resources; Current Students".
  • One course in Business Ethics:  All Commerce students must complete at least one course in Business Ethics with is typically met through completion of a course taken to satisfy a Liberal Studies Program requirement (Philosophical Inquiry or Religious Dimensions).

Liberal Studies Program Requirements:

Commerce students must complete coursework to satisfy requirements of the Liberal Studies Program (LSP) which consists of the following:
  • 13 Learning Domains spread across six domain categories:  Arts & Literature; Philosophical Inquiry; Religious Dimensions; Scientific Inquiry; Self, Society and the Modern World; and Understanding the Past.
  • 7 LSP Common Core requirements:  First-Year Program; Sophomore Seminar; Junior Year Experiential Learning; Senior Capstone.
  • Global Perspective (GP) Requirement:  Students must complete at least three courses with a global focus.  This requirement is typically met through the completion of courses taken to satisfy the Liberal Studies Program requirements.  A list of courses that satisfy the GP requirement can be found online under "Student Resources; Current Students".
