The Institute for Business and Professional Ethics
The mission of the Institute is to facilitate ethical deliberation by stirring the moral conscience and by developing models for ethical decision-making in business and the professions, particularly aimed at:

I. Students: Teaching students ethical practices and inspiring them to engage in social justice initiatives;

II. Business: Advancing ethical practices in business organizations in the Chicago area; and

III. Community: Catalyzing the for-profit sector to address poverty through active engagement, both locally and globally."

The Institute is governed by an external Board of Directors, most of whom are from business. The Wicklander Chair in Business Ethics, a faculty member at DePaul, serves as the Executive Director of the Institute.

Special programs include the Vincentian Colleges International Conference on Business Ethics, hosted every third year at DePaul, workshops for faculty and students, and a public lecture series on business ethics and values in the workplace. The annual Better Business Bureau Torch Awards for business ethics, given in collaboration with the Institute honor Chicago area organizations that demonstrate a special dedication and innovative approach to ethics. We have also engaged in a benchmarking study of similar institutes and centers at other Universities around the country.

The Institute is also charged with auditing the status of business ethics curricula at the University. Currently we are engaged in coordinating the 70 or so undergraduate sections of business ethics offered at DePaul each year through philosophy, religious studies, and management. As a result of the recent series of corporate and financial scandals and at the urging the Institute’s corporate board, we are engaged in proposing a required MBA course in business ethics for all MBA students at DePaul.

Each year we appoint one or two DePaul faculty as Wicklander Fellows. These Fellows will spend part of the academic year studying ethical issues in their respective disciplines. Each Fellow is expected to give a public lecture at the end of the term of the Fellowship. From time to time we will appoint short-term visiting Fellows from other institutions as well.

The research agenda for the Institute concentrates on ethical issues in business practice currently, in collaboration with other faculty at DePaul, we are working on three projects. The first is a series of case studies that highlight corporate best ethical practices from which we will extract more general models for best practice. The second is a study of women in corporate leadership positions. The third, in collaboration with Cambridge University, is a series of case studies on best practices of international corporations. Results from these studies will be published as cases and in book form.
