Ryan Award
Lawrence W. Ryan Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
In 1982 DePaul University's College of Commerce, in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Relations, instituted the Lawrence W. Ryan Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. This award is presented to the professor receiving the most votes of graduating seniors for excellence in teaching, at the June commencement ceremony.
This award is named to honor the late Lawrence W. Ryan who helped mold the College of Commerce during his 44-year career at DePaul University. He began as an undergraduate student athlete in 1936, earning academic honors while starring on the varsity football team as a lineman. He earned his baccalaureate in English in 1940, Juris Doctorate from DePaul University's College of Law in 1942, and from 1947-79 taught business law in the College of Commerce. Professor Ryan was noted, by both students and faculty, for his unswerving commitment to classroom excellence. In recognition of this dedication, the university posthumously granted Professor Ryan the Via Sapientiae award, the university's highest honor.
