Quality of Instruction Council Excellence in Teaching Awards

In support of the University's policy of placing the highest priority on programs of instruction and learning, the Quality of Instruction Council makes annual DePaul University Excellence in Teaching Awards. The awards recognize significant achievement in teaching and commitment to the teaching mission that can serve as University models. The awards are announced at a University convocation event each autumn, individual plaques are awarded, and the awardees' names are added to a roster of Excellence in Teaching Award winners in the Executive Offices. The awards also carry a taxable stipend of $2,000 each.

The Council encourages the recipients of an Excellence in Teaching Award to share their experience with DePaul colleagues. Awardees may be asked to participate in a forum or workshop devoted to improving the quality of instruction across the university.

A faculty member who receives an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Council may not be selected again in the three years immediately following. Faculty members may receive teaching awards from their colleges simultaneously with the QIC award.

College of Commerce/Kellstadt Graduate School of Business Nomination Process:

1. Applicants must qualify according to the following minimum criteria established by the Quality of Instruction Council
  • Eligible faculty members must have completed three full years of teaching at DePaul by past September.
  • The sole basis for selection must be teaching performance in degree-credit programs at DePaul (including curriculum design and any extra-classroom instruction related to degree programs)
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching must refer minimally to the academic year of the award and may optionally cover the two preceding years. Although consistency is to be given weight, this is not a lifetime achievement award.
  • A faculty member who receives an Excellence in Teaching Award is ineligible for three years following the award.
2. Faculty candidates may be nominated by:
  • Presidents of student organizations
  • Director/department chairs
  • Commerce faculty
  • Commerce students
  • Alumni Associations
3. The nominee will submit a package of all pertinent information including:
  • Vita or other biographical summary
  • Student evaluation statistics (rate course/rate instructor) and student comments (all copies-front and back-should be included rather than selected samples)
  • Grade distribution lists from the past academic year and Autumn Quarter of year for which the faculty member was nominated.
  • Statement of teaching philosophy
  • Syllabi, outlines, reading lists, study guides, assignments, etc. and any other pertinent information which may help distinguish the nominee
  • Highlights of innovative teaching methods used in instruction, i.e., group projects, case method, use of technology and distance learning techniques
This information must be submitted to Dr. Michael Jedel, Director of the Center Outreach and Assessment, no later than the middle of February. Dr. Jedel will forward the information to the Chair of the College Teaching Committee.
